When we think of the dirtiest room in our house, we usually think of the bathroom. From moldy grout, hairspray laden counters to the ever-lovely toilet bowl. This is proven by walking down the cleaning isle at the grocery store. They have a specific cleaner for every bathroom problem. However, those cleaners are filled with toxic chemicals you inevitably will be touching or inhaling while using them. So, in this post I will show you how to get that squeaky clean bathroom without possibly giving yourself cancer at the same time.
Now I know the thought of having to make your own nontoxic cleaners can be daunting but stay with me. You probably already have the ingredients in your home. Let’s talk about vinegar and baking soda. They are the powerhouse of green cleaning. You can use these two ingredients to clean just about anything. Check out these DIY cleaners below that have been tested and proven to work.
All purpose Vinegar Cleaner
You can use this on countertops, showers, bathtubs, you name it.
- 1 cup distilled vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 10-25 drops essential oil
Directions: Mix vinegar, water and essential oils into a clean spray bottle. Shake and your good to go.
All Purpose Cleaner Without Vinegar
Vinegar and other acidic ingredients can leave dull spots or etching on marble or the sealant on granite. So, for a cleaner that is gentler, but still gets the job done, try out this spray.
- 1/4 cup vodka
- 2 ¾ cup distilled water (regular water can cause streaking)
- 10- 25 drops of essential oil
Directions: Mix ingredients into a clean spray bottle and shake
Shower, tub, tile floor and grout cleaner
- 1 ½ cups Baking soda
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup liquid soap
- 2 tbsp distilled vinegar
Directions: Mix ingredients together to make a paste. Rub the paste over the areas you wish to clean. Allow it to sit and dry for about 20 minutes. Then take a scrub brush or sponge and scrub the area well.
Toilet Bowl Cleaner
- Baking soda
Directions: Sprinkle baking soda around bowl. Using the toilet brush to push up under the rim. Allow to sit for 10 minutes, and then scrub with a bowl brush and rinse clean.
Window and Glass Cleaner
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 cup rubbing alcohol
- 4 tbsp corn starch
Directions: In a large bowl, combine hot water and alcohol, then whisk in the cornstarch. Transfer to a spray bottle and spritz onto windows, glass or mirrors, then using a microfiber cloth, wipe clean.
