Now if any of you are like me and getting a good night sleep seems impossible then continue to read this article. I have tried just about everything to help with getting those necessary zzz’s. One of the most helpful things I have found is drinking a glass of tea at night before bed. It helps me to relax, slow down and unwind after a long day. Here are my 5 favorite teas that I drink before bed.
Chamomile Tea
This tea is probably at the top of any bedtime tea list. It has actually been studied and shown to help people stay asleep and wake up feeling less groggy. It contains an antioxidant, apigenin, that helps promote a mild tranquilizing effect. This is probably my favorite evening tea. I love that it has a slightly sweet floral taste. So instead of grabbing that sweet snack after dinner, try this tea out instead.
Passionflower Tea
Passionflower extract, often used in its tincture or capsule form is often used as a natural sleep aid. It helps to relieve anxiety and has a natural sedative effect. It contains certain flavonoids that bind to the same receptors as benzodiazepines and may help reduce symptoms of anxiety. Helping you let go of that crazy day you just had.
Peppermint
This is an ideal choice of tea before bed. It works as a muscle relaxant that may help you relax before bedtime. It has shown to give you more restful hours of sleep when drank before bedtime. It can also help calm the digestive tract, avoiding that dreaded bloating or heartburn after a big dinner.
Lavender Tea
More commonly used as an aromatherapy, it has known effects of promoting calmness and relaxation. Which in turn can lead to better sleep quality, resulting in feeling less fatigued. It increases slow-wave sleep, also known as REM sleep. Making the quality of the sleep you do get, a bit better.
Valerian Tea
Valerian Root has a long history of being a natural sleep aid. It helps to boost levels of a neurotransmitter, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), This has effects of reducing stress, which leads to more restful sleep. It does have a very earthy taste and odor. So try adding a dash of honey or maple syrup to improve the flavor.
